Why Drain Doctor

The Drain Cleaning Problem Nobody Talks About

Most plumbing companies in DFW offer drain cleaning. It is on their website, somewhere between water heater installation and slab leak repair. But drain cleaning is not where they make their money. Drain cleaning is how they get in the door.

Here is how it usually works. You call about a clog. A tech comes out. Before he tries to clear it, he runs a camera into the pipe. He shows you footage of roots, cracks, deterioration. Then he hands you a quote. $3,000. $5,000. Sometimes more.

You are standing in your kitchen with water backed up in the sink, and now you are looking at a major repair bill for something you thought was a clogged drain.

That is not a broken system. That is the system. The camera-before-the-cable approach exists because it is profitable. A $49 drain call turns into a $4,000 pipe job. That is the business model.

Drain Doctor does not use that model.

What Drain Doctor Decided Not to Become

Drain Doctor has been in Dallas since 1973. Our parents, Charlie and Mary Sarao, started the company as a Mr. Rooter franchise, running it from their house with Mom on the phones and Dad in the field. Mom and Dad bought a office in northwest Dallas in 1981 and dropped the franchise in 1988 to avoid someone in another state telling them how to help their customers. Mom and Dad renamed the company Drain Doctor and kept going even though they were now competing against a franchise drain cleaning company that they helped grow.

Dad ran the business until he passed away in 2023. We, Caroline Askey and Valerie Sarao, run it now, out of the same building on Storey Lane. We have made a few updates to bring the company into 2000’s but the foundation of focusing on solving the customer’s problem first is still there. Our competitors took a different approach.

Caroline and Valerie by truck

Somewhere along the way, most drain cleaning companies decided they could make more money by becoming full-service plumbing operations. Roto-Rooter did it. Mr. Rooter did it. The franchise that Mom and Dad left in 1988 now sells water heaters, does mold remediation, and offers sewer excavation. The name still says "rooter" but that has become just a way to get in a customer door for bigger sales.

Mom and Dad, and now us are focused on taking Drain Doctor in the other direction. Same service. Same focus. For 50 years.

We do not do pipe repairs. We do not install water heaters. We do not sell maintenance plans, chemicals, or add-on services. We clean drains and remove the clogs that are frustrating our customers. That is the whole business.

What does that means when Drain Doctor shows up at your house?

When a Drain Doctor technician walks through your door, there is only one thing that can happen: your drain gets cleared.

We have no reason to tell you your pipes need replacing. We cannot sell you a repair because we do not do repairs. The tech quotes you a flat rate before work starts, clears the line, and leaves. If the blockage turns out to be something beyond a drain cleaning, like a collapsed pipe or a structural failure, we tell you what we found and recommend you follow up with your own favorite plumber. We do not bid that work. We cannot because we don’t offer that service.

If we run a sewer camera, it is only after the clog is cleared, not before. That way you are looking at a clean, flowing pipe instead of backed-up footage designed to build a case for a bigger sale.

Plumbing companies across DFW send us their drain calls

We do not compete with plumbers. We handle the part of the job most of them would rather not do. That is plumbing companies in the DFW area refer their drain calls to us.

Think about what that means. A plumber who could do drain cleaning themselves is sending their customer to us instead. They do it because they know we will handle the drain, charge a fair rate, and send the customer back when they need actual plumbing work. We stay in our lane. They stay in theirs.

If the pros trust us with their own customers, that tells you something about what happens when we show up. Also, we don’t provide any incentive to plumbers to send customers our way, other than making their customers happy by solving their drain problem. No commission on the job done. No compensation other than keeping their customers happy and sending them back to them if they need more than drain cleaning.

If this is your first clogged drain

Csr answering phone

Not everyone calling about a clogged drain has a horror story from another company. Maybe this is the first time your kitchen sink stopped draining, or the first time a toilet backed up and the plunger did not fix it. You are searching for someone to handle it and you have no idea what to expect.

Here is what happens when you call Drain Doctor:

You call 214-357-4400. You talk to our team at the office in northwest Dallas. (Near Love Field) Tell us what is happening. We will get you on the schedule, usually the same day if you call before 2pm. Even after that we will do our best if we can.

You get the price before we start. Flat-rate, confirmed by your technician on site. Most residential drain jobs fall between $199 and $349. Not an estimate that creeps up once the work is underway.

We clear the drain in one visit. Our technicians carry cable machines and hydro jetting equipment on every truck. If the blockage turns out to be deeper or different than expected, we tell you before doing anything additional.

We tell you what we found. If there is an underlying issue like root intrusion or pipe damage, we let you know so you can follow up with your plumber. We do not do plumbing repairs, and we will not try to sell you one.

One question to ask before you hire anyone

Before you hire any company for a drain problem, including us, ask this:

"Will you try to clear the clog before you run the camera?"

If they say yes, you are probably in good hands.

If they say they need to see the damage first, ask yourself why they need to see damage before they have tried to fix the problem.

Then call us. 214-357-4400.

Common questions about Drain Doctor

Because it removes the incentive to upsell. A company that does not offer pipe repairs, water heater service, or general plumbing work has no reason to tell you that you need those things. Drain Doctor has been cleaning drains since 1973 and has never offered another service. That single focus is why plumbing companies in DFW refer their drain work to us.

Most residential drain clogs cost between $199 and $299 to clear. Kitchen sinks start at $229 by cable or $349 by hydro-jet. Main sewer lines start at $269. All prices are flat-rate and confirmed before work begins. No diagnostic fees, no hourly charges. See the full breakdown on our pricing page.

When a camera goes in before the clog is cleared, you are looking at a backed-up pipe. Roots, debris, and standing water make everything look worse than it may be. Some companies use that footage to build a case for expensive repairs. We clear the clog first, get the drain flowing, and then inspect. That way you see the actual condition of the pipe, not a worst-case snapshot taken under pressure.

If the blockage is caused by a structural failure like a collapsed pipe or a belly in the line that cannot be cleared with cable or hydrojetting equipment, we tell you what we found and recommend you contact a plumber for repair. We do not bid that work and we do not refer to any single company. You choose your own plumber.

Yes. Call 214-357-4400 before 2pm Monday through Saturday and we can typically schedule a same-day appointment anywhere in the DFW Metroplex. We do not offer Sunday or after-hours service. No holiday surcharges. The price we quote is the price you pay regardless of when you call.
